Your generous assistance afforded us to make meaningful
donations to the school that has impacted the student population in a positive way. The association wishes everyone a prosperous and productive 2011. We look forward to your continued support in 2011 and beyond.
Milestone: - The Mount Alvernia High School Alumni Association South Florida Chapter celebrated four (4) years of existence on December 14, 2010. At our January 2010 meeting we celebrated this success in a modest way with a small cake and drinks to show appreciation to our dedicated officers who go above and beyond to assist. Balancing family life and volunteering to assist their alma matter with the limited resources and challenges faced. For this we thank all our officers for staying the course over the past four years.
Event Calendar: - a plan was laid out for 2011 with the targeted events and scheduled dates to facilitate precise planning and execution of each event to maximize patron satisfaction and returns to the alumni association in order to better assist the school.
Fish Fry: - our first fish fry hosted in April 2010 at Joan’s residence was a success. We were able to raise needed funds for the school from this event. We received support from our school family, fellow alumni associations, friends and family. We would like to thank Joan for extending the courtesy of using her home.
501- C3 Status: - the Mount Alvernia High School Alumni Association South Florida Chapter made a positive leap in achieving 501-C3 status in June 2010. With this achievement the association is officially recognized as a charitable organization. All donations made to the organization qualify for a tax write off. We are imploring our past students, friends and well wishers to capitalize on this and make a commitment to donate yearly to your school through the association and benefit from the satisfaction of knowing that you will be touching lives in a positive way and at the same time be able to write this off in your yearly taxes. For this accomplishment we would like to thank Celia Wright, our outgoing treasurer, for her dedication in seeing the process to completion with all the challenges she faced communicating with the IRS and forwarding the necessary documentation. We could not have achieved this without her timeless efforts and persistence. Special mention to our Cornwall College brother, Michael Nedrick who also gave of his time, knowledge and expertise in making this positive step be a landmark on our years achievements.
All White Affair: - our signature event for 2010 dubbed “All White Affair”, hosted at the Holiday Inn Fort Lauderdale was well attended with Dale Holness as our guest speaker. This event saw past students and friends coming in from Chicago and Central Florida area bringing in a large contingent. The Chicago chapter became a reality shortly after, we wish them the best as they try to bring together past students from various years bridging the gap to recognize that our school needs our help in a desperate way. We wish the Chicago chapter God’s blessing and may they reap success. From this event we again raised need funds to assist the school, which also included additional proceeds from a raffle totaling One Thousand Dollars ($1000.00) which came off well. Again thanks to all our supporters.
Family Fun Day: - our first family fun day held in August 2010 at the Betti Stradling Park also provided needed exposure for the Mount Alvernia High School Alumni Association South Florida Chapter. In spite of the blessings in the form of rain we had a good turn out. The event was two fold, serving as a day to get the family out to socialize and also as a back to school supply collection drive to assist the student population. This allowed the association to forward a reasonable amount of supplies to the school to alleviate some of the back to school pressures for needy students.
85th Anniversary Celebration: - Mount Alvernia High School celebrated a milestone in October 2010, reaching eighty five (85) years of existence, providing quality education and mentoring to its all girl population. This milestone was celebrated with a well choreographed and co-coordinated week of events inclusive of a Church Service, prize giving and culminating with a dinner at the Holiday Inn. We would like to commend the Montego Bay Chapter for a job well done. Members and execute members of the South Florida chapter were in attendance, and supported in the different events. A donation of $2,000.00 was presented to the principal, Mrs. Cherian to go towards the restoration of the Science lab.
All Alumni Walkathon: - the Coalition Of All Alumni Associations Of Jamaica hosted a walkathon on December 4, 2010 at the Vincent Torres Park in Fort Lauderdale. We participated in this event and received pledges totaling over One Hundred Dollars ($400.00) which will go towards benefitting the school. The event was well attended with a variety of Jamaican Alumni Associations turning out in numbers to support. We thank those who responded in turning out to walk with us.
Festive Fish Fry: - our second fish fry dubbed “Festive Fish Fry” to coincide with the holiday season was held on December 11, 2010 at Lauderdale Manor. We thank those who supported, however we were challenged by the host of other holiday functions being staged on that particular weekend and for this reason we were not able to maximize support in attendance or revenues from this event. We will consider these factors in the planning of our events for 2011.
Forecast: - as we go forward in 2011, it is our goal to face the challenges head on, not wavering in our efforts to find creative ways of raising funds to assist the school. From our efforts last year the Science Lab project became a reality, needed painting was done to the school and sporting gears donated to the school. Once again we thank everyone including businesses that supported us last year and look forward to your support in the future.
